What has Beethoven and Ilaiyaraaja in common?

At first glance, it’s not much: because they are separated by centuries and thousands of kilometers. One is German, the other is Tamil. The former is the great master of the Viennese classical and age-romanticism, the latter has gained millions of fans around the world with music for films mainly in Tamil and Telugu. And yet: the language of music connects them. Ilaiyaraaja, who is famous for example. blending Tamil (South Indian) traditional music with classical Western, pop, rock, jazz, country and other musical elements, he has set out to create its first symphony within the Western European symphony writing genre.
