ELTE Hosts the Ambassador of India to Strengthen Academic and Cultural Ties

On 16 January 2026 the Indian delegation was received by Prof. Gábor Zemplén PhD., Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Dr. János Babos, Director of the Directorate of Services, and Ms Eszter Knyihár PhD., Head of the International Strategy Office.

During the meeting, the participants discussed the growing number of Indian students studying at ELTE and the broader trend of Indian students’ increasing interest in pursuing higher education in Europe, including Hungary. According to the Ambassador, Hungary has become an increasingly attractive destination for Indian students, and ELTE in particular stands out as a high-quality institution worthy of being actively promoted among prospective students.

At present, ELTE hosts 76 Indian students across Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral programmes, with the largest numbers enrolled in computer science, psychology and natural sciences. A significant proportion of them study with the support of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship.

The discussion also highlighted ELTE’s extensive institutional links with India, including active cooperation agreements with eight Indian universities and institutions, covering a wide range of academic fields.

These partnerships provide a strong foundation for further expanding academic exchange and joint initiatives.

In addition to student mobility, the parties outlined future cooperation possibilities primarily in the fields of cultural programmes and direct engagement with students, such as Indian cultural days and interactive events involving Indian and Hungarian students.
